The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Wednesday through Sunday, December 16 to 20, 2026. It leaves the tip of Lido Isle at about 6:30 each night. By the official 2026 route map, the lead boats reach Peninsula Village at 6:52 p.m. and Peninsula Point Beach at 7:25 p.m. So the parade takes 33 minutes to travel the Peninsula's bay side. The drone shows and the opening-night fireworks don't move with the boats. They run on fixed clocks at fixed places, so what you see depends mostly on where you stand.
The five nights barely differ from each other. The same boats pass on nearly the same schedule every night, and the drone times at Peninsula Park are the same on all five evenings. Where you stand makes the bigger difference.
The clock, block by block
The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce hosts the parade. Its route map lists an estimated arrival time at each marker. Here are the Peninsula-side markers, taken straight from the 2026 parade map:
| Time | Marker on the official map | What sits there |
|---|---|---|
| 6:52 p.m. | Peninsula Village | Buona Forchetta, CasaDami, Shorebird |
| 6:54 p.m. | Marina Park | Largest public viewing area on the route |
| 6:55 p.m. | Lighthouse Café | Dine & Watch venue |
| 6:56 p.m. | American Legion Yacht Club | |
| 6:57 p.m. | 15th Street Beach | Public beach |
| 7:02 p.m. | 10th Street Beach | Public beach |
| 7:14 p.m. | Newport Landing Restaurant, Balboa Boat Rentals, Newport Landing Sportfishing | Balboa Village waterfront |
| 7:15 p.m. | Balboa Peninsula Ferry Landing, Balboa Fun Zone, Harborside Restaurant and Balboa Pavilion | Balboa Village waterfront |
| 7:16 p.m. | Catalina Passenger Service, Davey's Locker | Balboa Village waterfront |
| 7:25 p.m. | Peninsula Point Beach | Last Peninsula marker |
The spacing tells you a lot. Most of the western stretch goes by in five minutes, from Peninsula Village at 6:52 to 15th Street Beach at 6:57. Then the boats cross the harbor toward Newport Harbor Yacht Club at 7:05 and the Bay Island Channel at 7:10. They come back to the Peninsula shoreline at Newport Landing at 7:14. After the Pavilion, the next Peninsula marker comes ten minutes later, at Peninsula Point. Then the route turns toward Pirate's Cove at 7:32 and China Cove at 7:33 on the far side of the channel.
One discrepancy is worth knowing. The Marina Park event page says the parade passes the park at 6:45 p.m., while the route map lists 6:54. Arriving by 6:45 covers both.
Balboa Village is where the drone shows bracket the boats
This year the parade is running nightly drone shows at two sites. One is over Balboa Bay Resort. The other is at Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone. The Peninsula Park shows run at 6:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on all five nights.
Line those times up against the route map. At the Fun Zone, the first drone show starts half an hour before the boats arrive at 7:15. The second starts about 45 minutes after they pass. That is the only stretch of the Peninsula where one evening can include a drone show, the full parade, and a second drone show without moving.
The same timing explains why the Balboa Village waterfront fills up with places to watch from. The organizer's Dine & Watch directory lists Newport Landing at 7:14 and Harborside Restaurant at the Balboa Pavilion at 7:15. Davey's Locker sits at marker 23, timed at 7:16. It also sells 2026 parade cruises on all five nights, December 16 to 20. The page lists sailings on the Catalina Flyer at 6 and 8 p.m. and on the Melissa Ann at 5:20, 6:50, and 8:35 p.m. Each cruise lasts about 75 minutes. A cruise turns the parade into something you join on the water. The schedule is posted on the Davey's Locker booking page. The directory does not list menus, reservation rules, or event pricing for the Peninsula restaurants, so those details are up to each venue.
Opening night runs on a different clock
Wednesday, December 16 adds two fixed events, and both start before the first boat reaches the Peninsula.
- 4:00 p.m. The fourth annual Holiday Market with Vogels Vibes opens at Marina Park, 1600 W. Balboa Blvd. It features 35-plus local makers, food vendors, live music, and children's activities. Admission is free, and the market runs until 8:00 p.m.
- About 6:15 p.m. An opening fireworks display goes off the Newport Pier, if conditions are judged safe under federal, state, and local guidelines.
- About 6:30 p.m. The parade leaves the tip of Lido Isle.
- 6:45 p.m. The first Peninsula Park drone show starts.
- 6:54 p.m. Boats reach Marina Park on the route map's schedule.
Marina Park covers 10.5 acres, has 177 parking spaces, and is billed by the organizer as the largest public viewing location on the route. It is also the first public viewing stop after the boats leave Lido. On opening night, the market, the fireworks window, and the first boats all happen within about three hours there. The rest of the Peninsula gets only the boats and the drones.
Peninsula Point gets the boats last
Peninsula Point Beach is the final Peninsula marker, at 7:25 p.m. That is 33 minutes after Peninsula Village and ten minutes after the Pavilion. The organizer lists no Dine & Watch venues on that stretch, and no drone site is closer than Peninsula Park. Watching from the Point is mostly about the boats. If you want the drones as well, the 8:00 p.m. show at Peninsula Park is still on the clock after the boats pass the Point.
The Point's other parade role happens days earlier, along its bayfront.
The Ring of Lights is judged before the first boat sails
The Ring of Lights is the waterfront home decorating competition that runs alongside the parade. Its 2026 schedule is set to a different calendar than the parade's:
- Noon, Friday, December 11: Entry deadline. Registration is $35.
- Monday, December 14: Judging.
- Wednesday, December 16: The parade's opening night, two days after judging.
- January 22, 2027: The Awards Reception honors both Boat Parade and Ring of Lights winners, and each award winner gets two complimentary tickets.
So a bayfront display entered this year has to be finished and lit by Monday the 14th. Many people only look at the date the boats arrive. The 2026 registration page confirms there are separate judged categories but doesn't name them. The 2025 winners list included a Best on Peninsula award, along with Best Traditional Lights, Best Display of Theme, and Hi Tech Christmas. Those are last year's categories, and this year's may differ. The organizer has not yet confirmed a 2026 theme or Grand Marshal. Its Grand Marshal page says the lineup is "coming soon," and its theme page still shows 2025's "Magical Nights of Lights." The homepage does have a "2026 Grand Marshal Lineup" heading, but the text under it describes the 117th parade.
Getting to your block in December
The organizer says shore viewing is free, all City parking lots will be open during the parade, and arriving early is the general advice. Several Peninsula details for December go beyond that.
Off-season rates apply. The City's municipal parking lot listing shows the main Balboa Pier lot, at Palm Street and Balboa Boulevard, with 614 spaces, open 24 hours. Its October-to-April car rate is $3.10 an hour or $30.85 a day, down from the May-to-September rate of $4.50 an hour or $45.35 a day. That lot is a few blocks from Peninsula Park and the Pavilion.
One nearby lot is shorter on spaces. The same City page lists the East Ocean Front lot at 105 Palm St., 93 spaces, as partially closed until September 2027.
The trolley is done for the year. The free Balboa Peninsula Trolley ran weekends from May 23 through September 7, 2026, so it won't be running in December.
The Balboa Island Ferry keeps its usual hours. The operator lists service from 6:30 a.m. to midnight every day of the year. It has posted no parade-night exceptions. The Peninsula ferry landing is itself a 7:15 marker on the route.
Construction continues on East Balboa Boulevard. The combined Balboa Branch Library and Fire Station No. 1 rebuild in the 100 block broke ground in March. City staff estimated then that the $14.6 million project would finish in September 2027, as the Daily Pilot reported.
